Dental Plan to Attract More Providers

The Canadian government is making adjustments to its dental care program, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), in efforts to increase participation among providers, reports CTV News.

Initially, 11,800 dental care providers partnered with Sun Life Financial since the program’s inception. To expand this network, Ottawa has introduced a new policy allowing providers to seek reimbursement from Sun Life on a claim-by-claim basis, rather than mandating formal program enrollment.

Health Minister Mark Holland, speaking from Dartmouth, acknowledged that many dental professionals had negative experiences with previous programs and desired a more flexible participation approach. Holland expressed optimism that this change would encourage more dentists to accept CDCP patients.

“We’ve heard from many providers about their past challenges with other programs. It’s crucial that they see this program as responsive to their needs and fostering a fair partnership,” Holland remarked.

Previously, individuals seeking CDCP coverage were restricted to visiting providers listed on Sun Life’s website. Officials believe the new approach will simplify access to preferred dentists.

“Some providers expressed concerns about the requirement to formally enroll with Sun Life but still wanted to treat CDCP clients. They can now submit claims directly, starting today,” explained a Health Canada official during a technical briefing.

The initial phase of the $13 billion program commenced on May 1, targeting seniors aged 70 and above. Health Canada reports that over two million eligible individuals have been approved for coverage, benefiting nearly 250,000 seniors who have received treatments. Eligibility has since expanded to include seniors aged 65 and above, adults holding a valid Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate, and children under 18. Health Canada has received close to 10,000 applications from DTC certificate holders and nearly 25,000 applications for children under 18.

Ottawa plans further expansions to eligibility criteria in 2025.

While the program enjoys support from various dental professionals, including dentists, denturists, dental hygienists, and specialists, concerns have been raised regarding eligibility criteria and billing arrangements with Sun Life.
