Bupa has introduced a new dental allowance for its consumer health insurance customers to support better oral health management.
Starting August 1, Bupa’s consumer health insurance policies will offer a £300 annual dental allowance. This allowance covers restorative treatments, such as crowns and fillings, for each person named on the policy. Bupa is the only health insurer in the UK to include dental care as a standard feature across all consumer policies.
How It Works
From August 1, new and renewing policyholders can access a dental appointment each year. This can be scheduled at one of 400 Bupa Dental Care practices throughout the UK and can be used for routine check-ups, new patient exams, or emergency visits. If further treatment is needed, customers can use their £300 allowance for restorative procedures like crowns or fillings.
All individuals covered under a UK consumer insurance policy will benefit from this allowance, allowing the entire family to receive quality dental care without affecting their no-claims discount or low-claims bonus.
Bupa’s move to include dental care as standard is supported by recent data from the Bupa Wellbeing Index (2024), which highlights that the average UK adult has not visited a dentist in two years, and 18% have not been to one in over three years.
Promoting Oral Health
Dr. Neil Sikka, Director of Dentistry at Bupa Dental Care, emphasized the importance of regular dental check-ups: “Routine dental visits are crucial for maintaining oral health, which is an integral part of overall wellbeing. By encouraging families to see a dentist annually, we aim to foster good oral health habits and detect issues early when they are easier to treat.”
Richard Washington, Interim General Manager at Bupa UK Insurance, added: “Bupa uniquely integrates health insurance with healthcare services, allowing us to address our customers’ health needs comprehensively. This connected care approach not only enhances overall wellbeing but also provides a smooth experience for our customers. Using the dental allowance is straightforward—customers simply need to inform the practice of their Bupa health insurance and provide their policy number. We handle the payment up to the allowance.”
