Starting in September 2025, the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy course will help tackle the ongoing national shortage of dental clinicians. The program is designed for A-level students and those currently working as dental nurses.

To enhance the learning experience, the course will collaborate with a community dental provider, offering onsite clinic facilities. Students will also have opportunities to learn alongside dentistry students from other institutions.

Dental hygienists play a vital role in preventive care by providing advice on diet, oral hygiene, and smoking cessation. They perform treatments to prevent oral diseases, including applying fluoride and fissure sealants, as well as diagnosing and treating gum disease.

On the other hand, dental therapists can perform all the tasks of a dental hygienist but also carry out fillings, extract primary teeth, provide crowns for primary teeth, and conduct pulp treatments on primary teeth. After further training, they can also offer composite bonding.

Course leader Michelle Williams expressed her pride in launching the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy course. She stated, “I am looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm for this amazing profession with the students and developing future dental care professionals with patient-centered care at the heart of what they do.”
