Children in the Illawarra Shoalhaven region are receiving free and convenient dental care through a mobile dental van initiative. The NSW Health Primary School Mobile Dental Program launched in October 2023 within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). In its first year, the program has visited 15 schools and provided dental services to over 1,500 children.
The mobile dental van travels to participating primary schools, offering onsite check-ups, cleanings, X-rays, and other preventive treatments. It also educates children about good oral hygiene practices. This initiative not only addresses immediate dental needs but also empowers children with the knowledge to maintain their oral health.
In addition to the mobile program, all children under 18 years old can access free dental care at public dental clinics provided by NSW Health.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating, “It is fantastic to see that the dental van has made 1,000 visits to public schools across NSW, offering free check-ups to so many public school students.” She emphasized the importance of teaching young students healthy habits early on.
Minister for Health Ryan Park also praised the program, saying, “I am thrilled to see this innovative program bring dental care directly to our schools. It makes it easier for children in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven to receive essential dental check-ups and treatments.” He noted that this initiative is part of a broader commitment by the NSW Government to enhance health services across the state, focusing on preventive care and early intervention.
