Achieving a bright smile doesn’t have to break the bank. Dr. Michael J. Wei, a cosmetic dentist based in Manhattan, shared some cost-effective hacks to remove stains and naturally whiten teeth.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is the foundation. Regular flossing and brushing can prevent stains and keep your teeth looking brighter, according to Dr. Wei.
One of his recommended methods involves using baking soda, a natural whitening agent, mixed with water. This DIY paste can be brushed onto teeth a few times a week to remove surface stains.
Additionally, Dr. Wei suggested using diluted hydrogen peroxide as a mild whitening agent. Swishing a mixture of equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide in your mouth for a short duration can help brighten your smile.
However, Dr. Wei emphasized the importance of using these DIY methods sparingly to avoid damaging the enamel.
He also cautioned against excessive use of apple cider vinegar, another natural teeth whitener, due to its acidic nature.
Oil pulling, a practice of swishing coconut or sesame oil in your mouth, was mentioned by Dr. Wei for overall oral health, although its whitening effects are limited.
In addition to these methods, Dr. Wei highlighted the significance of oral cleanliness, drinking water throughout the day, and consuming crunchy fruits and vegetables to help scrub away surface stains.
While these natural remedies may offer some whitening benefits, Dr. Wei advised consulting a dental professional for more effective and long-lasting whitening treatments.
