Woodbury, N.J. (CBS) — A teenager from South Jersey is feeling fortunate after his wisdom teeth removal surgery was covered entirely through a new community program.
Seventeen-year-old Dante Scott, who is about to start his senior year of high school, received the procedure at Westwood Oral Surgery in Woodbury, New Jersey, free of charge. The surgery, which typically costs around $5,000, was part of the practice’s “Wisdom for Wisdom” initiative.
Kristine Gleason, an oral surgeon at Westwood Oral Surgery, explained that the practice has been serving the community for 50 years. She said the program was designed to give back to students who have faced significant challenges.
“The money saved from this surgery will definitely help with college expenses,” Scott said, who aspires to become a mechanical engineer but faces financial hurdles.
Scott’s aunt and guardian, Taylor Brandon, nominated him for the program. “He lost his mother in 2018, and his father is inconsistently present,” Brandon said. “Despite these challenges, Dante has excelled academically.”
Brandon expressed gratitude for the program, noting the financial relief it provides. “It’s fantastic because every penny saved will go towards college expenses,” she added.
Gleason noted that Scott’s wisdom teeth were growing sideways, which can lead to discomfort and complications. Typically, wisdom teeth removal is performed with sedation and is generally straightforward.
Scott, who recovered well from the surgery, expressed his appreciation. “This opportunity is incredible, and I’m extremely grateful,” he said. Following the procedure, Scott is looking forward to enjoying ice cream and smoothies—though he’ll avoid using a straw.
