October is National Dental Hygiene Month, a time dedicated to promoting oral health and recognizing the vital role of dental hygienists. Established by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) in 2009, this month emphasizes the importance of good dental hygiene practices and regular dental visits.
Oral health is often neglected, yet it plays a crucial role in overall well-being. Poor dental hygiene can lead to various diseases, including cavities and oral cancers, which can have broader health implications.
Many dental issues develop silently, making early detection and prevention critical. Once symptoms like pain occur, it may be too late to reverse damage, such as tooth loss.
Maintaining good dental hygiene involves daily brushing and flossing to control harmful bacteria that can cause infections like tooth decay and gum disease. Inflammation from these infections is linked to more severe conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. Moreover, certain medications can reduce saliva flow, which is essential for washing away food particles and balancing mouth acidity.
Regular dental check-ups are essential for preventing gum disease, which can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of blood clots and heart attacks. Research indicates that individuals with healthy gums are significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and some cancers. Additionally, gum disease has been associated with premature births and low birth weights.
Dental hygienists are often the first point of contact in dental care.
They play a key role in prevention and early detection of oral diseases.
The Taft College Dental Hygiene Program contributes significantly to community health by offering affordable services while training future dental hygienists. The program is accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and has received approval from the Dental Hygiene Board of California.
Throughout October, various events and initiatives will take place to promote oral health awareness. This month serves as an opportunity for individuals to reflect on their dental hygiene practices and schedule necessary appointments with their dental care providers.
