Australia is experiencing a significant rise in preventable hospitalizations due to dental issues, highlighting critical gaps in healthcare and insurance coverage.
According to the latest data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), nearly 87,400 hospital admissions in 2022-23 were linked to dental conditions that could have been avoided with earlier intervention.
Reasons for Delayed Dental Treatment
Many Australians are postponing dental care primarily due to financial constraints. This delay often results in more severe dental problems that necessitate hospital treatment. This growing trend is straining the healthcare system and exposing limitations in current insurance policies.
The AIHW reports that only slightly more than 50% of Australians aged 15 and older visited a dental professional during 2022-23. Delays in seeking treatment are particularly concerning among children aged 5 to 9, who recorded the highest rates of hospitalization for dental issues.
Insurance Coverage And Dental Costs
Even those with private health insurance face substantial out-of-pocket expenses for dental care, which can further delay treatment. For instance, in 2021-22, the median cost for a basic preventive service like plaque removal was $61, with insurance typically covering only $40. This leaves patients responsible for the remaining $19.
More complex procedures lead to even higher costs. A single tooth extraction has a median price of $180, with patients paying about $95 after insurance. Major treatments like full crowns can cost around $1,600, leaving patients with an out-of-pocket expense of approximately $903.
These financial gaps between insurance benefits and actual costs discourage timely care, increasing the risk of more serious health issues later on.
Impact on Private Health Insurers
The surge in hospitalizations related to dental conditions poses new challenges for private health insurers. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) reported that health insurers paid over $18 billion in hospital benefits in the year leading up to June 2024, marking a 7.9% increase from the previous year. Of this amount, $6.3 billion was allocated for ancillary services, including dental care.
In response to these challenges, health insurers are enhancing benefits for dental services. Recent data from HealthShare indicates a rise in dental appointments outside regular office hours, with 35% of these bookings made by new patients. This shift suggests that affordability and scheduling flexibility are becoming increasingly important for patients seeking dental care.
Private health insurance membership has also seen considerable growth. In the June 2024 quarter, approximately 64,000 more people signed up for hospital treatment coverage, while ancillary coverage—including dental—rose by over 120,000.
The most significant growth was observed among Australians aged 30 to 34, indicating a rising awareness of the value of dental insurance among younger adults.
Calls for Government And Insurer Reforms
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) is urging stronger government intervention to assist those unable to afford regular dental care. ADA President Dr. Scott Davis has called for targeted government-funded programs to support low-income Australians, Indigenous communities, and seniors who are most affected by high dental costs.
Dr. Davis stated, “If people saw their dentist regularly, they’d be less likely to face more complex treatment further down the track.” He emphasized the need for both government and insurers to expand coverage options, particularly for preventive services that can help avert more severe health problems in the future.
As Australia grapples with rising hospitalizations due to dental issues, addressing these financial barriers and enhancing access to care will be crucial steps toward improving public health outcomes.
