Governor Kathy Hochul has signed new legislation aimed at improving dental health for children in New York. The law, enacted on Saturday, expands access to fluoride treatments for pediatric patients.
Under the new law, registered dental assistants and licensed practical nurses are now authorized to apply topical fluoride varnish to children’s teeth. Previously, these professionals were not permitted to administer fluoride, although they could perform other dental procedures such as fitting crowns and taking impressions.
Assemblymember Crystal Peoples-Stokes of Buffalo, who sponsored the legislation, emphasized the importance of fluoride in preventing cavities. “Fluoride is scientifically proven to prevent cavities and protect our kids’ teeth,” Hochul stated in a press release from her office.
Peoples-Stokes added, “Good dental health is a critical component of overall health. I will continue to explore ways to ensure as many children as possible receive dental fluoride treatments.”
The legislation aims to increase the number of licensed professionals who can provide fluoride treatments in dental offices.
This move is expected to enhance availability and efficiency in delivering preventive care.
State Senator Nathalia Fernandez, who sponsored the Senate version of the bill, remarked, “Dental disease should never stand in the way of a child’s health or success. By expanding access to fluoride treatments, this legislation ensures more children can receive the preventive care they need, regardless of their circumstances.”
Fernandez also highlighted that this law represents a significant step toward addressing healthcare disparities in underserved communities. She expressed gratitude to Governor Hochul for prioritizing the health of New York’s children with this new measure.
