The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is set to enhance its coverage, offering more comprehensive oral health services to Canadians. This expansion aims to assist millions of uninsured individuals in accessing essential dental care.
Launched in 2023, the CDCP focuses on Canadians without dental insurance, particularly families earning less than $90,000 annually. The Government of Canada anticipates that this initiative will improve oral health for up to nine million uninsured residents.
Starting in November 2024, the CDCP will introduce more advanced treatments that were previously only partially covered or unavailable. Key additions to the dental services requiring preauthorization include:
Complete Specialist Examinations: Thorough examinations by dental specialists will now be covered.
Crowns: These will be available for restoring damaged teeth but will require preauthorization.
Root Canal Re-Treatments: Additional treatments for previously treated teeth will be included.
Dentures: Coverage will extend to removable partial dentures, overdentures, and immediate dentures.
Major Surgical Procedures: This includes complex surgeries affecting gums, jaws, and other oral tissues.
Sedation and Anesthesia: Moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia for dental procedures will be covered upon approval.
The CDCP already covers a variety of oral health services to make dental care affordable. Current offerings include diagnostic and preventive services, basic dental work, and minor surgeries. As the plan evolves, it aims to provide even broader access to necessary dental treatments for Canadians in need.
